In the Winter Dark – Tim Winton

In the Winter Dark is a short Australian novel set somewhere out in the country in fairly modern times. In the Winter Dark

Its an exploration of the bonds that tie neighbours, of geography, fears of outsiders and a shared responsibility. There is little tying them together until there is a fear tha tmust be confronted, then as neighbours they have to choose whether to stick together or let outsiders in.

The fear is papable, and this is definitely not a book to read when alone on a stormy night.

I thought the acknowledgement of the wider world at the end was crucial, that we have the reminder that this isn’t an island and no matter how remote a place is, it is not a separate goldfish bowl
